London – the beating heart of England, a pivotal artistic hub and culturally diverse destination, and birthplace of all Adrianne Weber garments
Tate Modern is presenting an ingenious juxtaposition of the visionary works of Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian this summer. Despite never meeting, af Klint and Mondrian both rooted their abstract languages of abstract art rooted in nature. Their artistic pursuits were driven by a desire to comprehend the forces that shape life on earth. Both artists shared an interest in new ideas of scientific discovery, spirituality and philosophy. Af Klint was also a medium, and this exhibition showcases the large-scale, otherworldly paintings she believed were commissioned by higher powers. Visitors will be immersed in these ideas through the vibrant signs, shapes and colours in both artists’ beautiful, complex work.
Summer Exhibition 2023 – Royal Academy of Arts (13 June – 20 August 2023)
The Summer Exhibition, which has been running continuously since 1769, makes its annual return to the heart of Piccadilly. Every year, the Summer Exhibition seeks to engage visitors in a cultural dialogue around a particular theme. This summer’s motif is “Only Connect”, taken from the famous quote in E. M. Forster’s 1910 novel Howards End. British painter David Remfry RA takes the reins as exhibition co-ordinator, seeking to expose the anger he sees rising within modern society and advocate for a sentiment of empathy towards each other. Most of the 1,614 featured works are available to buy, and sales from the Summer Exhibition support the exhibiting artists and the RA’s charitable work, including training the next generation of artists in the Royal Academy Schools.
Anselm Kiefer: Finnegans Wake – White Cube Bermondsey (7 June – 20 August 2023)
This summer, White Cube gallery has prepared a thought-provoking exhibition about Anselm Kiefer, one of the most influential European artists of his period. Drawing on literature, politics, religion and philosophy, Kiefer often revisits particular subject matter or imagery, creating work that resonates with the notion of history as one continuous cycle. He examines, uncompromisingly, historical themes and, the legacy of recent European events. Utterly in tune with his artistic output, the artist’s new body of work responds to James Joyce’s eponymous novel of 1939. Concrete, copper, glass vitrines, unreadable lead books, and Joycean inscriptions abound. It's as though language has evolved into a material, a sculptural medium. Notable: White Cube gallery is well-known for producing valuable publications to complement their exhibitions, such as Kiefer's 'Superstrings. A Symposium', designed in partnership with Hans Ulrich Obrist. The book was released in 2023 and is well worth reading.
